20 female teams hitting ice this weekend for Chicks with Sticks in Yarmouth This annual event showcasing female hockey hits the ice in at the Mariners Centre Oct.

24 26. This will mark the seventh year the event is held. The Chicks with Sticks tournament is for female teams at the atom, peewee, bantam and midget levels. Since the tournament's inception it has attracted teams from throughout the province. When the Chicks with Sticks tournament first began, it was unique in that there wasn't any event on this large scale promoting and featuring female hockey. The inaugural event featured more than 20 teams and brought together 350 female hockey players. It still continues to draw large amounts of teams and hundreds of players. Therefore aside from the opportunity to showcase female hockey, the weekend tournament is also significant in terms of the economic impact it has annually for Yarmouth, in terms of people spending money at restaurants, for accommodations, retail purchases and buying their gas to get home. Since the introduction of the Chicks with Sticks event, the Yarmouth County Minor Hockey Association has continuously been looking to build female hockey within its association an effort that has seen success. For the past number of years the association has iced competitive female bantam and midget teams. Last year's bantam team won its division at Chicks with Sticks jimmy choo yule and also won gold at provincials. The midget team placed silver at Chicks with Sticks and won silver at provincials. Both teams also won their league championships. There are both bantam and midget female rep teams in the Yarmouth association again this year. Both are competing at Chicks with Sticks, along with an atom team from Yarmouth that has been pulled together for this tournament. Aside from icing female teams, the Yarmouth minor hockey association has placed a heavy emphasis on female hockey development by offering various types of skill development sessions. It is trying to encourage more female hockey participation at the younger levels. Incentives have even included offering season registrations at half price for new female players who are jimmy choo gold wedges looking to try the sport out. Monica LeBlanc, the director of female jimmy choo black lace hockey for the Yarmouth association, says the Chicks with Sticks tournament is an event everyone looks forward to each year. "We're very excited. We feel that this event keeps female hockey at the forefront," she says. "We look forward to having the teams come out. LeBlanc says for many, Chicks with Sticks is also seen as a kick off to their season.

"A lot of teams that we've met throughout the years say that they love coming to our tournament. It's a good way to start the season and they always feel that we're very hospitable and well organized." For family and friends that can't be in Yarmouth in person to cheer on the teams, the Mariners Centre MCMedia video crew will be live streaming games played in Arena 1 over the Internet, as they did last year.
